Pinjare Ke Panchi Re (2026)
Pinjare Ke Panchi Re is a music composition written & sung by Kavi Pradeep. It originally appeared in a 1957 Bollywood film but its popularity superseded the original source as a beloved devotional bhajan though the words itself are secular. It's a beautiful song and I always wanted to make an animation where the bird frees itself; here my visuals are inspired by 19th century Rajasthani miniature painting.
I was curious about how its creation were so close to India's independence, partition, and Gandhi's assassination. This led me to understand the composer was deeply involved in the independence movement. This only adds to the profound beauty of the song as I know it.
Pinjare ke panchi re, tera dard na jane koi.
Dear caged bird, nobody understands your sorrow.
Bahar se tu khamosh rahe tu, bhitar bhitar roy re.
From outside you remain quiet, (but) deep within you cry so much.
Kahe na sake tu, apni kahani,
You are unable to say your (life) story,
teri bhi panchi, kya zindgani re.
even you too bird, what kind of life you have?
Vidhi ne teri katha likhi,
The god of destiny wrote your life story,
aansuoo mein kalam duboi.
by dipping the pen in tears.
Chupke, chupke, rone vale,
Silently, silently, those who cry,
rakhna chhupake, dil ke chhale re,
keeping hidden, the wounds of their heart,
yea patthar ka desh hain, pagale, koi na tera hoy...
this world is heartless, silly, nobody is yours
